  • Japan had very little to brag about their b-sides but when they picked up on them you can be certain they didn't miss - writing instrumentals with great skill even though these sometimes seem like desperate sketches of things proper yet to see the light of day. This confusingly double package collects together tracks that some might find pure scrap - the poppier, edited version of 'Gentlemen' is at every contrast to the remaining three, extremely melancholic pieces - 'The Experience of Swimming', 'The Width of a Room' and not-that-different-from-the-album-version of hauntingly beautiful Eno-esque ballad 'Burning Bridges'. At this stage, music of Japan started its fine course much in favour of Sylvian's later, excellent solo career - and 'Burning Bridges' can very easily be viewed as his first-ever solo attempt. Sounds like eternity. Every note. A deserved favourite.
